Recombinases
One protein cuts, swaps and reseals all four strands: no ligase, no polymerase, no free ends
- Site-specific: Cre/lox, Flp/FRT, phage integrases
- Homologous: recombineering, RecA
Recombination is rearrangement between two DNAs over sequences they share. Some recombinases read one very specific short site; others are not fussy about sequence at all and will recombine anything similar enough. Both kinds are in this section.
Section divider: Recombinases. One protein cuts, swaps and reseals all four strands, with no ligase, polymerase or free ends. Split into site-specific systems and homologous recombination.
