Lectures¶
The tutorials on this site cover how to run an experiment. These cover why it works: the chemistry underneath the protocols, the methods people tried before the current ones, and what the field does with any of it.
The slides animate a step at a time, so a mechanism can be taken at whatever pace you need, and every step carries its narration, so they read as well as they present. Arrow keys advance; ? lists the other keys.
BioE 140L — Synthetic Biology Laboratory¶
The Berkeley course these tutorials were written for. If you are working through the tutorials, this is the lecture sequence that goes alongside them.
Thirteen lectures. It opens on the field as a whole and on the group project, then spends three lectures on the molecules: the enzymes that cut, join and copy DNA; how a DNA of a given sequence actually gets manufactured; and how to edit a genome rather than carry a plasmid. Then design — what makes a good host strain, what counts as a part, and the biosafety, biosecurity and intellectual property questions that decide what gets built at all. Then measurement: assaying live cells, assaying what is left after you break them open, directed evolution, combinatorial libraries, sequencing a whole library at once, and the software that runs the rest.
BioE 234¶
Decks for BioE 234 will be added next semester.
